WINEMAKER NOTES
2001 Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova – Benchmark Brunello from a Classic Vintage
The 2001 Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova remains one of the definitive expressions of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG at the turn of the century. From the estate’s pioneering southern-facing vineyard sites, Tenuta Nuova—literally “new estate”—was envisioned by Giacomo Neri as a modern Brunello with classical soul. In 2001, this vision reached full maturity, culminating in a wine that reflects Montalcino’s terroir, precision winemaking, and aging potential.
Tasting Notes
Now entering peak drinking, the 2001 Tenuta Nuova shows rich layers of dried cherry, black tea, cedar box, and warm earthy spice. The palate reveals softened tannins and mature fruit, underpinned by vibrant acidity and a long, savory finish. Decades of bottle age have only enhanced its complexity and depth.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Produced exclusively from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grown in the southeastern part of Montalcino at high elevation, the wine is vinified in open-top conical fermenters with long macerations and aged for approximately 30 months in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and French barriques. The estate’s attention to clone selection and vineyard exposure plays a critical role in its unmistakable character.
Investment & Collectibility
The 2001 vintage is one of the most celebrated in Brunello history and has proven to be one of the best-performing investment vintages for Montalcino collectors. Tenuta Nuova has remained a consistent standard-bearer for modern Brunello, and this vintage continues to be in demand among those assembling verticals or rare Italian collections. Perfect for your collection.
Vintage Insights
The 2001 growing season in Montalcino was characterized by ideal spring weather, a hot, dry summer, and an extended harvest season with no rain interruptions. These conditions allowed for perfect phenolic ripeness while maintaining structure, giving the wines superb balance and aging potential. The 2001s are often compared to the lauded 1990s—classic in structure, but even more polished in execution.
