WINEMAKER NOTES
1989 Chateau Haut-Brion – A Monumental Vintage from Pessac-Leognan
The 1989 Chateau Haut-Brion is widely regarded as one of the estate’s most powerful and expressive releases of the twentieth century. Produced during a warm and generous growing season, this First Growth exemplifies the depth, structure, and aromatic complexity that define Haut-Brion’s singular terroir within Pessac-Leognan.
Tasting Notes
Fully mature yet remarkably composed, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, smoked earth, cigar wrapper, and graphite. The palate is rich and layered, delivering dark fruit, leather, and mineral tones framed by resolved, silky tannins. Despite its concentration, the wine retains balance and freshness, carrying through to a long, savory finish that continues to evolve in the glass.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a small portion of Cabernet Franc. Grapes were harvested at peak ripeness and vinified with traditional methods, followed by aging in new French oak barrels. The gravelly soils of the estate and the exceptional conditions of the 1989 vintage produced fruit of outstanding intensity and longevity.
Investment & Collectibility
The 1989 Haut-Brion is considered a cornerstone wine for collectors of mature Bordeaux. Its historical importance, limited availability, and consistent critical acclaim have sustained strong demand across the secondary market for decades.
Vintage Insights & Accolades
The 1989 Bordeaux vintage is celebrated for its richness and structure, particularly on the Left Bank. At Haut-Brion, these conditions yielded a wine of profound depth and enduring balance.
