WINEMAKER NOTES
1998 Chateau Lafite Rothschild – Refined Pauillac First Growth
The 1998 Chateau Lafite Rothschild reflects the measured elegance that defines this historic Pauillac estate. As a First Growth with centuries of heritage, Lafite is known for its aromatic precision and structural grace. The 1998 vintage offers a more classical expression, emphasizing balance and finesse over sheer power.
Tasting Notes
The bouquet opens with notes of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, and subtle floral hints. On the palate, the wine is composed and finely textured, showing mature dark fruit, tobacco leaf, and mineral undertones. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity carry through to a long, restrained finish that highlights Lafite’s signature refinement.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, supported by Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vineyards rest on deep gravel soils that provide excellent drainage and contribute to the wine’s aromatic clarity. Traditional vinification and aging in French oak barrels allow for gradual integration and development of complexity.
Investment & Collectibility
Chateau Lafite Rothschild remains one of the most recognized names in Bordeaux, with sustained global demand across vintages. The 1998 release has matured gracefully, offering collectors an opportunity to secure a First Growth with proven aging stability and enduring market interest.
Vintage Insights & Accolades
The 1998 Bordeaux vintage was more favorable on the Right Bank, yet top estates in Pauillac crafted wines of structure and composure. At Lafite, careful vineyard management ensured a balanced and elegant outcome.
