WINEMAKER NOTES
2000 Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France
Tasting Notes
The 2000 vintage of Chateau Margaux is a benchmark expression of this First Growth estate, capturing the balance of power and grace that defines Margaux’s finest wines. Aromas of blackcurrant, violet, graphite, and cedar unfold in the glass, followed by a layered palate of ripe dark berries, cassis, and subtle hints of tobacco and leather. The finish is remarkably long, polished, and seamless, reflecting two decades of elegant maturation. Decanting is recommended to reveal its full aromatic complexity.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Crafted from a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, the 2000 Château Margaux was vinified using traditional methods and aged for over two years in new French oak barrels—a rare but intentional choice for exceptional vintages. The estate's gravelly soils and the warm, dry summer of 2000 produced grapes of remarkable concentration, surpassing the benchmarks set by legendary vintages like 1986 and 1995.
Investment & Collectibility
This vintage has earned acclaim as one of Château Margaux’s greatest, with its remarkable aging potential and finesse making it a highly sought-after addition to any fine wine collection. Its performance at auction and rarity on the secondary market further enhance its appeal for collectors and investors alike. Perfect for your collection.
Vintage Specifics & Accolades
The 2000 growing season was defined by warm, dry weather through the summer, ideal for grape concentration and ripening. Harvest began on September 25th. The wine’s structure and aromatic complexity have been praised by critics as surpassing the heights of even the esteemed 1990 and 1996 vintages.

Winery Notes
The grapes had rarely, perhaps never, been as concentrated, particularly the Cabernets. In certain cases we surpassed the already historic levels of the 1986 and 1995 vintages with an elegance and softness on the palate, reminiscent also of the 1990 and 1996 vintages.
It seemed, in fact, that 2000 was setting a new benchmark in quality never before attained, at least in terms of style. Throughout the barrel ageing, these first impressions were gradually confirmed. The wine has now acquired a slightly tighter texture and at the same time keeps such a soft and especially long finish that it seems to go on forever… The bottling took place in November 2002, after over 2 years of barrel ageing.
Such a long ageing is unusual but not as rare as one might think: most of the greatest vintages are aged for that length of time. Putting our patience to the test, it is better to wait a few years before opening it, unless you decant it several hours in advance. A wine built for eternity.
Climate
April and May were warm and rainy, an early encouragement to downy mildew which was halted by the very dry summer. The absence of rain in August and at the beginning of September was very beneficial for the ripening process and the concentration in the grapes. A few light showers at the beginning of the harvest could not spoil this dream vintage. (The picking began on 25th September).
