WINEMAKER NOTES
2021 Colgin Cariad – A Refined Napa Valley Cult Red with Precision and Depth
The 2021 Colgin Cariad showcases the power and elegance of Napa Valley’s Pritchard Hill and its surrounding benchland terroir. As one of the flagship wines from Colgin Cellars, Cariad continues to reflect the precision viticulture and meticulous winemaking that defines Ann Colgin’s legacy in California cult wine.
Tasting Notes
In its youth, the 2021 Cariad offers a layered bouquet of violets, graphite, and fresh black currants, alongside savory notes of cedarwood, licorice root, and warm spice box. The palate is remarkably structured with ultra-fine tannins, tightly woven black fruit, and a mineral-tinged finish that suggests long-term aging potential. Its balance of richness and poise is a hallmark of the vintage.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Cariad is a Bordeaux-style blend primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, with portions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Grapes are sourced from David Abreu-managed sites, including Madrona Ranch and Thorevilos. The wine is fermented in small stainless steel tanks and aged for approximately 20 months in new French oak barrels from top coopers, before bottling without fining or filtration.
Investment & Collectibility
Colgin’s Cariad has developed a loyal following among collectors of California Cult Wines. The 2021 vintage, made in limited quantities, is already regarded as one of the most age-worthy and finessed expressions in recent memory. Perfect for your collection, particularly alongside bottlings of IX Estate and Tychson Hill.
Vintage Insights
The 2021 growing season in Napa Valley was dry and mild, marked by low yields and exceptional concentration. Cool nights and a long harvest window gave producers like Colgin the opportunity to pick at optimum phenolic maturity. This vintage will be remembered for its balance, structure, and potential longevity, often compared to standout years like 2013 and 2018.
