WINEMAKER NOTES
1998 Masseto Toscana IGT – Mature Super Tuscan Merlot
The 1998 Masseto Toscana IGT is a mature expression from one of Italy's most collectible estates. Produced entirely from Merlot grown on the clay-rich slopes of the Masseto vineyard near Bolgheri, this vintage reflects the depth, structure, and quiet authority that established Masseto as a defining Super Tuscan.
Tasting Notes
The bouquet opens with black plum, dried cherry, cedar, tobacco, graphite, and subtle Mediterranean herb. On the palate, the wine is polished and layered, showing mature dark fruit framed by integrated tannins and balanced acidity. Notes of cocoa, leather, and crushed stone extend through a long, composed finish that emphasizes refinement over weight.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
Masseto is sourced from Merlot vines planted on blue clay soils, a site that contributes density, mineral tension, and long-term aging capacity. Careful parcel selection, controlled fermentation, and aging in French oak barrels preserve texture while allowing the vineyard's natural structure to remain central. The 1998 season produced fruit with ripe concentration and steady balance.
Investment & Collectibility
Early vintages of Masseto are increasingly difficult to source, particularly with sound provenance. The 1998 vintage holds strong appeal for collectors seeking mature Super Tuscan wines with established market recognition, limited availability, and a clear connection to one of Italy's benchmark Merlot vineyards.
Vintage Insights & Accolades
The 1998 Tuscany vintage produced wines of depth and classical structure. At Masseto, these conditions resulted in a layered, cellar-worthy wine that continues to show poise with bottle age.
