2001 Opus One – Mature Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend
The 2001 Opus One reflects a period of increasing refinement at this Napa Valley estate founded by Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Produced in Oakville, Opus One is recognized for its Bordeaux-inspired blend and consistent structure. The 2001 vintage, shaped by favorable growing conditions, now presents a mature expression with balance and composure.
Tasting Notes
The nose reveals developed aromas of blackcurrant, dried plum, cedar, and tobacco. On the palate, the wine is supple and integrated, offering mature dark fruit supported by softened tannins and steady acidity. Notes of leather, earth, and subtle spice unfold through a long, resolved finish that reflects extended bottle age.
Winemaking & Vineyard Details
The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec sourced from Oakville vineyards. Fermentation is conducted in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by aging in French oak barrels to build structure and complexity. The 2001 growing season provided consistent warmth and even ripening.
Investment & Collectibility
Older vintages of Opus One are increasingly limited in availability. The 2001 vintage offers both historical context and mature drinkability, appealing to collectors seeking developed Napa Valley wines with established provenance.
