Tasting Notes
The 1997 Sassicaia offers an evolving aromatic profile of blackcurrant, dried cherry, plum, and blackberry, complemented by cedar, tobacco, leather, and earthy undertones. Notes of Mediterranean herbs, licorice, spice, and forest floor contribute further complexity. Its lingering finish reflects the elegance and complexity associated with well-aged Sassicaia, although individual bottles may vary according to their storage history.
Winemaking and Vineyard Details
Produced by Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri, Sassicaia is traditionally composed of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The estate's vineyards benefit from the moderating influence of the nearby Mediterranean Sea, with gravelly, limestone-influenced soils that contribute to the wine's structure and distinctive mineral character. Sassicaia's winemaking emphasizes careful vineyard selection, controlled fermentation, and maturation in French oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop complexity while preserving the character of its coastal Tuscan terroir.
Investment and Collectibility
Sassicaia occupies a singular position in Italian fine wine history, recognized for its pioneering role in establishing the international reputation of Super Tuscan wines. The 1997 vintage is especially desirable for collectors interested in mature releases from a celebrated growing season. Its historic pedigree, established secondary-market following, and increasingly limited availability make it a noteworthy addition to collections of aged Italian Cabernet-based wines.
Vintage Insights and Accolades
The 1997 vintage is widely remembered as one of Tuscany's most celebrated growing seasons, producing ripe, concentrated wines with generous fruit and approachable structure. At Tenuta San Guido, the vintage yielded a Sassicaia recognized for its richness, elegance, and mature complexity.
