WINEMAKER NOTES
2023 Screaming Eagle The Flight - Rare Napa Valley Merlot Blend
The 2023 Screaming Eagle The Flight is the Merlot-led companion to Screaming Eagle's legendary Cabernet Sauvignon and one of Napa Valley's most tightly allocated wines. Originally released under the Second Flight name, this bottling has evolved into The Flight while retaining its distinctive identity. The 2023 combines the estate's characteristic precision and refinement with a generous, red-fruited expression centered on Merlot.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 opens with expressive raspberry, red plum, and red cherry, complemented by floral and mineral nuances. The palate is polished and layered, balancing ripe fruit with freshness, fine-grained tannins, and a chalky mineral character. Subtle savory notes and restrained oak add complexity without overwhelming the fruit, while the finish is focused, persistent, and composed. Its combination of richness and elegance makes this a compelling expression of Screaming Eagle's Oakville terroir.
Winemaking and Vineyard Details
The 2023 The Flight is composed of 65% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Cabernet Franc. Produced from Screaming Eagle's Oakville estate, The Flight has historically been led by Merlot, distinguishing it stylistically from the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant flagship. The 2023 vintage emphasizes purity, balance, and textural finesse rather than sheer power.
Investment and Collectibility
Screaming Eagle is among the most sought-after producers in Napa Valley, with wines distributed through a highly restricted allocation system. The Flight offers collectors a distinct expression of the estate while sharing the scarcity and pedigree associated with the Screaming Eagle name. The 2023 release is particularly notable for its limited availability and long-term collector appeal.
Vintage Insights and Accolades
The 2023 vintage produced a poised and refined Flight with vibrant red fruit, mineral definition, and the structure for further development. Given the wine's very recent release, only verified published reviews should be used as additional critical coverage becomes available.
