The Durand® Wine Bottle Opener

Opening an older bottle of fine wine presents a particular challenge: the wine may have matured beautifully, while the cork has become increasingly fragile with age. The Durand Wine Opener was designed specifically for these bottles, helping remove old, damaged, brittle, or crumbly corks whole and intact.

For collectors opening mature Bordeaux, Burgundy, Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, Vintage Port, or other cellar-aged wines, the condition of the cork can be difficult to predict. A conventional corkscrew may pierce a weakened cork only for it to split, crumble, or be pushed into the wine during extraction. The Durand cork remover is designed to reduce that risk.

Designed for Older Fine Wines

The Durand combines the principles of an Ah-So with an additional stabilizing mechanism specifically intended for compromised corks. Its two-prong component slides between the cork and the inside of the bottle neck, rather than relying solely on pulling a fragile cork upward with a conventional corkscrew.

This makes the Durand 2 prong design particularly useful when opening mature bottles where preserving the integrity of the cork matters.

The result is controlled extraction with support around the cork, helping keep an aged cork intact as it leaves the bottle.

For serious collectors, this is more than a matter of convenience. Preventing fragments of deteriorated cork from falling into a mature wine can make opening and serving an important bottle considerably easier.

Why Use a Durand Corkscrew for Old Wine?

Corks naturally change as bottles spend decades in the cellar. They may become dry, soft, compressed, saturated, or structurally fragile. Even a bottle that has been stored carefully can have a cork that no longer responds well to a conventional corkscrew.

A traditional helix-style opener pierces the cork and places much of the extraction force through its centre. With a weakened cork, that force can cause it to split or crumble.

The Durand opener is engineered specifically with mature bottles in mind. The prongs provide support around the cork during removal, making it a specialized old wine opener for collectors who regularly open bottles with significant age.

It is particularly relevant for mature fine wines where cork condition and careful service deserve the same consideration as provenance, storage, and decanting.

When Should You Use The Durand Wine Bottle Opener?

The Durand wine opener is intended for older bottles with potentially fragile or compromised corks. It should not be used as the everyday opener for young wines with healthy, firmly seated corks.

For younger bottles, a quality conventional corkscrew remains the appropriate choice.

The Durand is most useful when bottle age or visible cork condition suggests that conventional extraction could result in the cork breaking apart.

For a collector with a cellar containing mature Bordeaux, Burgundy, California cult wines, Vintage Port, or other older bottles, its value is best considered in relation to the bottles it is designed to protect.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is The Durand wine opener?

The Durand is a specialized wine-opening tool designed for extracting fragile, deteriorated, or compromised corks from older bottles of wine. It incorporates a two-prong, Ah-So-style component that supports the cork during removal, helping reduce the likelihood of an aged cork breaking or crumbling into the bottle.

2. Why is The Durand wine opener so expensive?

The Durand wine opener, priced at $145, is a specialized tool rather than a conventional everyday corkscrew. Its design is intended specifically for difficult cork extraction from older fine wines, where a brittle or deteriorated cork can break when opened conventionally. For collectors regularly opening mature and valuable bottles, the cost should be considered in the context of its specialized function and repeated use.

3. Is The Durand worth it?

For collectors who regularly open older fine wines, a Durand can be a useful addition to a wine-service kit. Its principal benefit is greater control when dealing with fragile corks that might otherwise break, crumble, or fall into the wine. For drinkers primarily opening young bottles, however, a Durand is generally unnecessary and a conventional quality corkscrew is more appropriate.

4. What is the best wine opener on the market?

There is no single wine opener that is best for every bottle. A high-quality waiter's corkscrew is well suited to most young and normally aged wines, while an Ah-So can be useful for certain older corks. The Durand wine opener is specifically designed for mature bottles with potentially fragile or compromised corks, making it particularly relevant to collectors of older fine wine.

5. Is The Durand an Ah-So wine opener?

The Durand incorporates an Ah-So-style two-prong mechanism as part of its design. The prongs are inserted between the cork and bottle neck to help support the cork during extraction. This approach is particularly useful with older corks that may be too fragile for conventional extraction alone.

6. Does The Durand pierce the cork?

The Durand's two-prong component slides between the cork and bottle rather than piercing the cork. However, the complete Durand system also incorporates a helix that enters the cork and works together with the prongs during extraction. This combined design distinguishes the Durand from a conventional standalone Ah-So.

7. How do I use a Durand wine opener?

First, carefully remove the capsule and inspect the cork and bottle neck. Insert the Durand's helix into the centre of the cork without immediately attempting to extract it. Next, carefully work the two prongs between the cork and the inside of the bottle neck. Once correctly positioned, the components work together so the cork can be removed gradually with a controlled twisting and pulling motion.

Extra care should always be taken with very old bottles, particularly when the cork is visibly deteriorated or saturated.

8. Should I use The Durand on young wines?

No. The Durand is primarily intended for older bottles where cork deterioration makes conventional opening difficult. For young wines with sound, elastic corks, a quality waiter's corkscrew or other conventional wine opener is generally the more appropriate tool.
